Paul Schlichtman
2004 President, Massachusetts Association of School Committees

Paul Schlichtman, MASC Immediate Past President, served as President of the Association in 2004. As President, Mr. Schlichtman was an activist who focused his presidency on strengthening the voice of school committee members across the Commonwealth.

To give MASC a stronger policy voice on Beacon Hill, he formed the association’s Advocacy Committee, which is charged with organizing support and advancing the legislative agenda adopted at the association’s Annual Meeting.

Mr. Schlichtman, in his speeches and writing, communicated to a widespread audience the Association's message of local control and adequate funding. He is frequently sought as a speaker, and writes extensively on issues related to school governance and finance. He has appeared as a guest on WBZ Radio’s David Brudnoy Show, Comcast CN8 NiteBeat with Barry Nolan, and NECN Newsnight with Jim Braude and Chet Curtis.

He is currently in his ninth year of school committee service in the Town of Arlington. He served four years as a member of the Minuteman Regional Vocational-Technical School Committee before his election to the Arlington School Committee in 2001. He has served as chair, vice-chair, and secretary to the Arlington School Committee, and was a member of the Superintendent Search subcommittee. He currently serves on the Curriculum Instruction and Assessment and Policies and Procedures subcommittees.

Since 1998, Mr. Schlichtman has been an active participant on the MASC Board of Directors, serving in 2003 as the Association’s President-Elect, and formerly as Vice Chair and Chair of Division II. He has served as Chair of the MASC Resolutions and Nominations subcommittee, and serves as a member of the Advocacy, and Regional School subcommittees. He has also served as a member of NSBA’s Federal Relations Network, as a delegate to the NSBA Delegate Assembly, and is a member of the Governor’s Local Government Advisory Council.

As an educator and a school committee member, Paul Schlichtman brings to his role a wealth of experience in school finance, curriculum, and student assessment issues. His experience provides him with an understanding of the relationship between policy and practice in public education. A graduate of the City University of New York and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, he is currently Coordinator of Research, Testing and Assessment for the Lowell Public Schools.
